What do we mean with mobility?

As defined by wikipedia: Mobile computing, a generic term describing one's ability to use technology untethered, but often used to refer to access to information or applications from occasionally-connected, portable, networked computing devices.

However mobile technology should be seen as more general. Any technology which enables someone to perform activities independent on the exact location. Mobile technology is typically associated with mobile communication. However mobile communication is just one aspect of mobile technology. Note that if data required for the activity can be taken to other places, then communication is not essential. It may be just processed at a different location.

Two types of mobility can be identified:

  • Long haul. In this case the distance between the device and the base platform (with which the device is communicating) is large > 1 km. The main idea is that the device is not "physically" bound to a certain location. E.g. while travelling in a car (i.e. the location of the car is not really bounded).
  • Short haul. In this case the usage of the device is somehow bounded by the location. However the exact location is still not fixed. Example is laptop locations in a house.
