New York Times quotes the research on seniors using cell phones. While about 80% of people 19 to 65 own mobile phones and more than 45% of those 10 to 18 do, only 39% of people 65 and older use them, according to the Yankee Group, a research firm. Moreover, older people who do use phones spend less money for fewer minutes each month than Americans under 65, the firm says. (IT FACTS 2004)

According to parents, nearly 50% of children ages 12-13 will have a cell phone by the end of 2007, while 33% of children ages 10 or 11 will have a cell phone in the same period. JupiterResearch finds that cost is more of an enabler than a motivator of cell phone adoption among youth - 18% of parents added their young child to existing plans because it was economical to do so. But parents are still reluctant to add children younger than 10, believing it’s unnecessary. (IT FACTS 2007)

There's one classification called IDC Mobile user matrix:

IDC’s in-depth study breaks out mobile users into four distinct segments: Display Mavens: individuals who deliver a large number of presentations while mobile and also use, to a moderate degree, entertainment applications during periods of idleness. The Mobile Elite: the early adopter segment that adopts the latest devices, applications, and solutions, and also uses the broadest number of them. Minimalists: the opposite of the Mobile Elite, these individuals employ just the basics for their mobility needs. Voice and Text Fanatics: a more communications-centric group of individuals who tend to be focused on text-based data and messaging.
