Description

Digital convergence is the main issue for manufacturers and consumers. Digital convergence means one electric gadget has many different functions together instead one product has one function. For example, IRIVER, a Korean top mp3 player, starts finding new business model because mp3 file playing functions are available in the cell phone. There are more examples. The cell phone becomes to have many functions, such as PDA, digital camera, video game player, car navigation, GPS, etc. Development of ICTs has brought the digital convergence. However, the needs of digital convergence make ICTs innovate quickly.

Enablers

1. People feel uncomfortable of carrying many small electric gadgets.

2. Technological development; CPU, microprocessor, memory, wireless internet,

Wifi, WiBro, Nano-tech, battery life, etc.

3. Manufacturing costs are going down.

Inhibitors

1. Some wants the one-function specialized products.

2. Consumers need to change a whole new gear when they want to upgrade a

  function of current gear.

3. Most people would hesitate to replace the gadgets. Converged products

and individual products would exist simultaneously.

Paradigms

Many digital gadgets we have used would be disappeared and converged with other product. Digital convergence would change the life style of consumers and let manufactures innovate their current products. Due to the reduction of the number of electric gadgets, still having the same functions, we may decrease the consumption of electricity and other resources. After the period of adoption, people would start replacing the old multi one-function products with a multi-function product. Digital convergence will go forward with the development of ICTs, resulting in the “Ubiquitous World”.

Timing

The concept of digital convergence appeared in the late 1970’s. Since the late 1990’s, with the speedy development of information and communication technologies (ICTs), digital convergence has been realized step by step.
