What is the main source of revenue for writers?

Royalties (fee) per book sold, ranging anywhere from 2 to 10% of net price. (arranged by publisher)
Usually, the publisher will give the writer an advance after the first draft.
Other possible sources:
- Speakers fees, for speaking at conferences etc.
- Royalties for sales of translated version
- Royalties for turning the book into a movie
