Due to it's geographic size, Russia has a wealth of natural resources, including agricultural resources, oil and gas, mining and forestry. Russia is now the world's largest oil exporter and largest natural gas exporter.
Russia has a sizeable military and advanced military technology, making it one of the pre-eminent military powers.
Russia is much larger in geography and population than many of its immediate neighbours (former soviet republics) and so is able to dominate them politically.
Russia also has a relatively well-educated workforce.
