Growing crops in city skyscrapers would use less water and fossil fuel than outdoor farming, eliminate agricultural runoff and provide fresh food to the city, without having to import from other areas.

Enablers:

Limited amount of Land: there is not enough arable land in the world to feed the growing population.

Fossil fuels: reduction in fossil fuel emissions

Transportation: City will be able to grow its own produce and will not have to transport produce from other areas of the world. This will reduce the cost of transportation, making it more environmental friendly.

Water: Currently 70% of fresh water is used to irrigate farms. This water cannot be recycled due to contamination from pesticides and fertilizers. Vertical farms will reduce the amount of water used, making it more efficient.

Growth in population: Growing population will reduce the amount of arable land.

Inhibitors:

Cost: Energy costs to run the vertical farms

Technology: Concerns regarding genetically modified produce. How safe are they truly?

Competition: Availability/Access to cheaper produce from around the world

Land: Availability of land/ buildings fit for creating vertical farms.
