Description:

While in the past it was only possible to see certain television programs when they were broadcasted on the cable, nowadays it is more and more common to see these programs whenever you want, where ever you want. Whit it booming popularity of broadband internet it becomes easier and faster to watch on the time that you prefer.

  • Technology : The technology to send big files over the internet is improving
  • Technology : Capacity of hard disk is improving rapidly
  • Technology : BitTorrent is designed to widely distribute large amounts of data without incurring the corresponding consumption in costly server and bandwidth resources. According to CacheLogic BitTorrent is responsible for 35% of all traffic on the internet
  • Time : People have less time to watch television and prefer to make up their own schedule

Inhibitors:

  • Intellectual rights, patents, or in general: knowledge protection (e.g. RIAA)
  • The lost of watching unexpected programs (zapping)
  • Digital rights management (DRM)

Paradigms:

When media on demand is becoming more and more popular it will be more difficult for companies the reach their consumer. New techniques introduce possibilities to record programs with any commercial, radio will get less popular when you can always play music from your endless music database. The introduction of Windows MCE makes these possibilities more accessible for consumers.
