When someone looks at the age distribution of teachers in Europe, he/she can observe an obvious trend. In many countries age groups of teachers closest to retirement are over-represented. As a result, many countries will experience teacher retirement on a very large scale in the near future. In six countries, where there is a high percentage of teachers over 50 years old, teacher retirement rates of 40 % or higher are expected within this period. Countries where the trend is more worrying are Germany and Italy where almost 70 % of teachers will retire in the next 20 years.
