Population forecasts concerning the distribution
When someone looks at the age distribution of teachers in Europe, he/she can observe an obvious trend. In many countries age groups of teachers closest to retirement are over-represented. As a result, many countries will experience teacher retirement on a very large scale in the near future. In six countries, where there is a high percentage of teachers over 50 years old, teacher retirement rates of 40 % or higher are expected within this period. Countries where the trend is more worrying are Germany and Italy where almost 70 % of teachers will retire in the next 20 years. This trend will cause the "renewal" of the educational labor force and could potentially lead to "modernization" of the educational system with new ideas.
many countries will experience teacher retirement on a very large scale in the near future. In six countries, where the proportion of teachers in secondary education peak in the over 50 age
groups, teacher retirement rates of 40 % or higher are expected within the next 10 years. In contrast, in
other countries where the proportions tend to decrease through the older age groups, retirements will. Countries where proportions of
teachers in successive age groups over 40 first peak at a high level and then fall, as in Germany or Italy where almost 70 % of
teachers will retire in the next 20 years. This trend will cause the "renewal" of the educational labor force and could potentially lead to "modernization" of the educational system with new ideas.
This trend is irreversible under the current situation. However, due to fiscal problems in Europe there has been a turn towards extending the retirement age. If that applies also for teachers that are to retire in the next ten to twenty years, would that trend be delayed.

Timing

The trend has already started and is projected to last for ten to twenty years. However, as years go by (within this period) the impact of the trend will get more and more intense.
