Description :

System on Displays(SOD) is displays that the circuits of driving or system for display are integrated

directly on display panel and made in the manufacturing process of the panel. Conventionally display panel and LSI chip have been made separately and then assembled into module-assembly process. With the integration of circuits into display, it is possible to make more compact, lighter weight and more reliable displays with low power consumption. In order to make low-cost SOD, high performance TFT (Thin Film Transistors) in the low temperature process below 600℃ on glass substrate have been developed. More system chips and circuits are integrated with development of the device and design technology. And potentially CPU and memory can be integrated in the display.

Enablers :

With coming’s of multimedia environment , evolution of mobile phones will need high quality display with high reliability. And compactness, light weight, low power consumption are necessary for the mobile display.

Environment of ubiquitous will be common. Many information can be reached anywhere and anytime.
Most powerful and convenient information terminal will be the multimedia display.
Bt the short life cycle of new product, the developing time of the next product will have to be reduced.
SOD will be able to reduce the developing time of the new product and it can be a big chance to display manufactures.

Inhibitors :

Insufficient infrastructure for SOD has retarded the development.
The industry for SOD needs large investment, but has the possibility of low productivity in manufacturing.

Paradigms :

- With development of internet and ubiquitous, various displays will be coming out, and SOD certainly is a way to meet the consumer satisfaction in the future display products.

Experts :

 Experts on SOD : Sony,
                  Hitachi,
                  NEC,
                  Sharp.

Timing :

SOD with integrated driving circuits appeared at 2004
SOD with integrated input device will appear at 2008
SOD with integrated CPU and Memory will appear at 2015
