Currently, the rendering performance of web based applications is not yet comparable to the speed that desktop applications are known for. In order to achieve speeds comparable with x-window based systems, virtual machine or 'sand-box' based technologies that can run in the browser are developed. Java-applets, Flash and Silverlight are examples of such technologies.
